EDDY MERCKX CRITERIUM

In a world where aluminium and carbon-fibre dominate bicycle frames, steel (unless you’re a die-hard Fan of Steel) often gets overlooked as desirable material for a bike frame.

In this preview of the new Eddy Merckx Criterium, I’ll touch on why steel was used and outline the modern components that the frame is built with.

But, first:

WHY STEEL?

Comfort. Durability. Ease of manufacture.

These are the key characteristics of choosing steel over aluminium.

You see, because steel is so easy to work with, frame builders can tune how compliant (or spring-y) the frame feels. But by its very nature, steel is more compliant than an equivalent aluminium frame.

That compliance is key to comfort. The flex in the tubes absorb high-frequency road vibrations and deliver a smooth ride that often cannot be matched by aluminium – unless the frame undergoes some heavy hydroforming.

Creativity is also another allure for frame builds. See those beautiful lugs on the fork? Yeah, that’s impossible to do with aluminium.

Durability of steel frames makes it the choice for cyclists who value durability the most. That’s why for Audax (super long distance rides completed within a time limit) rides and touring you’ll see most riders on steel frames.

WHO IS THE CRITERIUM FOR?

Eddy Merckx states the Criterium would suit any inner city rider. Additionally, the Criterium is perfect for general fitness riders, commuters, tourers or those hit by a bit of nostalgia.

THe Criterium is low and aggressive. So it’s going to suit riders who are at home on bikes like the Giant TCR, Trek Emonda and Specialized Tarmac.

Or, those who generally don’t have issues with flexibility.

Unlike the above race bikes, the Criterium leans towards stable, calm and measured handling.

THE CRITERIUM’S COMPONENTS

Shimano Claris components sit at the heart of the Criterium.

Claris is the most affordable road bike-specific component in Shimano’s range. It’s suited to riders who value durability, robustness and cost-effective replacement of components.

In short:

They prefer workhorse components.

There’s 2 front gears and 8 rear gears. Thoughtfully, Eddy has used Claris’ new wide range gear ratio – ranging from an 11-tooth cog to a massive 32-tooth cog.

The benefits?

This not only delivers more range (perfect for riding varied terrain), the large 32-tooth cog makes hill climbing much easier. So if you’re not super fit, don’t stress, the Criterium will make riding up hills easier than normal.

Stem, seat post, handlebar and wheels are all made from aluminium to keep weight down.
